Fire & Explosion Risk Assessment (FERA)

Fire & Explosion Risk Assessment (FERA) systematically quantifies the likelihood and consequences of fire, explosion, and thermal radiation events to support design decisions, layout optimisation, emergency planning, and demonstration of ALARP. FERA provides essential input to safety cases, risk assessments, and performance standards in high-hazard industries.

Service information

  • Identify and screen credible release, spill, ignition, and escalation scenarios, including domino effects
  • Model jet fires, pool fires, fireballs, and vapour cloud explosions (VCEs) using tools such as DNV PHAST, FRED, EFFECTS or FLACS, or equivalent
  • Calculate thermal radiation, overpressure, impulse, and flame impingement loads on people, equipment, structures, and escape routes
  • Specify the requirements for active and passive fire and explosion protection systems, including blast walls, deluge, fireproofing, gas detection, and ESD systems
  • Integrate FERA outputs with QRA, EERA, ESSA, TRIA and QRA to support ALARP demonstration and safety case development
